Learn more about ReStory® Internships

  • Restoration Counseling was founded on the belief that God doesn't make mistakes. When he thought us up, he had wonderful and beautiful things in mind. Yet we were born into a broken world whose brokenness affects all of us at the deepest levels. He's not interested in trashing his creation, but instead restoring us all to his original design. He will make all things new...again. That is the core of Restoration.

When it comes to our hearts and lives, we are convinced that God's story is truer than the world's story. Our logo is a cross-section of a tree...on the outside it's a grown-up tree showing strength and struggle. On the inside are the concentric rings of story- the ages and seasons, the ups and downs, the glories and pains we have experienced, making up the fullness of what that tree is today.

To ReStory™, we must first recognize where we have been in order to know where we are going. At Restoration Counseling, we're interested in restoring the heart on all levels.

  • The foundation for our work is the intersection of theology and psychology. While everyone on our team comes from a different faith background and story, we all share a core belief in God the Father, Son and Spirit. We may have different expressions of this faith, but we all anchor ourselves in these ancient truths:

We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • We value you as an individual in the context of a team. We think team looks a lot more like a community than officemates. We celebrate one another, mourn with each other, and root for each other. You are safe here. The work of counseling can be isolating and lonely. We are committed to breaking through the isolation and bringing connection, relationship and togetherness to the work we do.

As a team, we value community time (regular prayer, check-in, and rhythms of play and retreat) and consultation (weekly).

As an intern, you will be considered and treated like a team member. In addition to the above mentioned rhythms and training we offer, you will have a separate supervision time with your on-site supervisor.

  • We will train you to be a story expert. You will learn how to weave faith and therapy together in a non-judgmental, unforced way. In your internship, you will graduate from the ReStory® Institute Level One, our in-house certification process to teach the ReStory® approach Chris Bruno has developed over the years.

  • People who exhibit CHARACTER:

    Jesus-follower, holds to Christian orthodoxy

Self-reflective and humble, has personally engaged their own story of brokenness

Actively pursuing knowledge, experiences and is willing to learn from RC

Kind and inviting toward others, where people feel their “withness”

Passion, call to journey with others through their stories toward restoration

    People who exhibit BUSINESS ACUMEN:

Team players - committed to being part of something bigger than themselves, with a vision and passion for the whole rather than self

Ministry-hearted - sharing RC value of relentlessly giving to our community through service, volunteer speaking, creative offerings

Committed to on-going client referral nurturing, business strategy, follow-through and revenue generation

Grit and resilience - willing to put in the work and maintain balance even when difficulty or setbacks arise

  • Participation:

Because we value team, we ask you to participate in prayer, socials, consult, and business meetings consistently. This is not a requirement, but a desire to be together in the spaces and places where we find togetherness and growth.

Because this is a relational business and clients come from an experience of you, we ask you to leverage your greatest interests and passions to facilitate the community’s awareness of you, and for you to draw your ideal client. RC does have incoming clients, but everyone on our team participates in developing the client pipeline. The best team members have people lining up and asking to work with them because they have become known.

    Hours:

Because you are an adult, you can schedule your client hours whenever you want.

Together with you we will establish a reasonable weekly client load that fits both your internship needs and lifestyle and our team’s collaborative goals. We will be reviewing this weekly and monthly, helping you reach your requirements and maintain a healthy practice as a part of the whole at RC.

Because you are a stakeholder, not an employee, you are in charge of your own schedule, including vacation, personal leave, and sick time (remembering client care and needs). We do not track vacation days, sick days, etc. Again, you are an adult and a professional. Take care of yourself and your clients, and we all do well.

    Professionalism:

You are a growing professional in your field. We expect you to care for your clients at the highest standards of care in the industry. We maintain professional and ethical standards that exceed those in our field, and every team member commits to pursue excellence in all areas.

Every team member brings to our community their training, experience and expertise. We all benefit from the collaboration across fields, and are committed to learning new ways of engaging the human story. Whether from a traditional therapy modality, from a spiritual context, coaching or other approach, we value all perspectives and professions that align with our vision and values.

As we are a team, we recognize that one of us represents the whole. Our choices affect us all, and we expect all team members to maintain standards (in their work with clients and with one another) that are evident of excellence and reflective of Christ.

  • Wonderful community

I have really enjoyed my experience as an intern at ReStory. The community aspect of interning has been such a wonderful experience. Through collaborative care, supervision, and other trainings I have gained wisdom, insight, and perspective from others on the team, while also feeling that my voice is welcomed and appreciated.

    — Sherae 2024

  • Inclusive and Supportive

The team has been inclusive and supportive, treating me like I belong from the beginning. The quality of supervision was a high priority to me in seeking a site and has been everything I’d hoped. I have felt supported both personally and professionally and I’m so grateful for this positive internship experience as I grow and learn the ropes of this field.

    — Julie 2022

  • Not an echo chamber

I really appreciate the focus on the whole self of both the client and the counselor, and an environment in which my faith was not only accepted but encouraged. Yet, it’s important to note that RC is not simply another Christian echo chamber. I have been stretched and challenged and grown, and supported throughout in every way.

    — Leslie 2021

  • Exceeded my expectations

I feel so lucky I landed an internship at RC. It exceeded my high expectations. For one, I received more training than most of my classmates. I learned so much. And, it’s such a great group of people. I found it to be a highly collaborative, supportive, and a fun environment.

    — Nick 2020

  • "New" but not "Less-than"

I was “new” but never “less-than”. This unspoken element of the team culture at RC was probably the most formative to my development as a counselor. I really was part of the team. I didn’t have to earn, prove, or hustle my way into getting a vote, but was inherently valued and invited.
